5 tips to welcoming your boss at home

February 1st, 2018,

Independent workers, you are not forgotten. However, this piece is for those who welcome their boss at home. Here are five rules of etiquette for such an occasion:

  1. Make sure no kid's / dog's toys are lying around in the lobby: promotions tend to make themselves scarce following ankle sprains;
  2. According to the boss' personality, you may not have to wear your suit and tie, however, jogging pants and a tank top might be a tad too casual. Find the balance.
  3. If he (or she) has accepted your invitation, assume it was in good faith. Be yourself; it is an occasion to show another side of your personality, which will give a fuller picture of who you are. Keep the weirder stuff for a second dinner, though.
  4. Gather information about allergies (food related or others) in advance; it would be sad to lose the punch line of a good joke for cause of anaphylactic shock.
  5. Keep the work related conversations for the after-dinner digestif. That way, the dinner can take place in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere. And not boring for the spouses who are not concerned.
